The Stokke family has a remarkable history with Janus. As Janus celebrates its 130th anniversary, we caught up with Siv Stokke (fourth generation Janus in her family) and someone who knows the Janus brand better than anyone...

You and your family have an incredible history with Janus... Could you describe it in a brief timeline?

My family has been working at Janus for a combined time of 253 years together!
Ten members of my family have worked for Janus – Sofie (my great grandmother), Olav (my grandpa), (Ingolf and Arthur Mikal – my grandpa`s brothers) Borgny (my grandma), Gudrun (my mum), Siv (me), Saritha (my daughter), Susann (my other daughter), Stian (my son). The connection with Janus started when my grandpa Olav bought a piece of land in Espeland and built a house back in 1937. It was (and still is) right next to the factory today. The place is called Skogly and it cost around 800 kroner (around 70 Euros). This is the house in which I live today!

And what about your own personal history with Janus?

I was only 17 years old when I got my first job working in the sewing department. Back then it was really hard earning your money, because we were paid by the amount of sewing that we did! It was also quite a dusty place to work, made worse by the fact that I was allergic to dust! I got sick quite often and my doctor told me to find another job. After 18 months, I did.
Two years later and I was back at Janus. This time, working in the warehouse. I absolutely loved working there because not a single day was the same. When I returned for a third time, I was a mum with three kids. This time I think it’s for good! This August marks 21 years with Janus since rejoining for a third time. As we say in Norway, ‘all good things come in three.’ 😊 During this period, I worked in the sales department, I ran our factory store, and eventually took another job at the warehouse.

I really loved working in the warehouse, so when Katrin asked if I would work with her in customer operations, I said NO! But, somehow she convinced me that this was a nice job too and she was right.
You could say I’ve worked in almost every corner of Janus during my time here! ❤

“What makes Janus unique? For sure, it’s our quality and the fact that we are producing in Norway…”

Why do you think your family has such a strong history with Janus?

I think it’s because it has always been a safe and welcoming workplace. This is reflected in the high average age of our team. We come – we stay! ❤

How proud are you to work for the company?

I am very proud of working at Janus! When you wake up every morning and know that someone is depending on what you do, that makes me feel good. I have great co-workers that brings a smile on my face and makes me happy.

What do you think makes Janus special?

Janus has been a brand for everyone over the years. Our clothes are knitted to a very high quality and they last for years. Janus has a very good reputation for most people in Norway.

Since you joined, how have you seen Janus change and how do you feel about the future?

I have seen many things change, some good and some bad, and the future is a little 'blurry' for me right now. The higher prices and focus on high ends sports retail is something very new for Janus, but I’m optimistic that it will lead to new and exciting opportunities!

What do you think makes Janus unique and what is it like to work there today?

Janus is a friendly place to work where each department looks after its co-workers. Not everyone is necessarily best friends, but we all get along and it’s a good atmosphere. 😊. Janus employees are also willing to help with other tasks outside their job. If needed, most of us will work in other places such as the warehouse, the shop, the online shop etc.,
What makes us unique? For sure, it’s our quality and the fact that we are producing in Norway.

How long do you think your family will be connected with the brand in the future?

My children are grown up and they are working elsewhere right now, so I think this amazing history may end with me. But maybe there’s a small chance it continues if I’m blessed with grandchildren…

What do you get up to in your free time?

When I’m not at work I train my dogs and go hiking in the mountains. I am a breeder of German Shepherd and have four in my home now.
Gucci (14 weeks), Fancy Fate (22 months) Chilly (7 years old and their mother), Unique (almost 13 years old and the grandmother ❤).

Finally, what do you think is so magical about wool?

It keeps you warm, even if you get wet!
